The Foot Mouse
After my sophomore year of high school, I was asked by a friend of my dad’s to help work on an idea he had for a hands-free mouse. I was intrigued by the idea and accepted the challenge.
We approached some college students, who were part of an entrepreneurship team at a local university, to help build a prototype. They wanted to retain ownership of 100% of the intellectual property, so we decided to build the prototype ourselves. Using a gaming controller and some other parts, I figured out how to change the software settings of the controller to make it act like a mouse and was able to construct a working prototype – which we called the “Foot Mouse”.
Rocking the foot forwards and backwards moved the mouse up and down, as shown in the picture above. Moving the mouse left and right was controlled by twisting the foot as shown below.
